Training in locksmithing should be based on a strong foundation in mathematics, English and a strong interest in locks. Locksmiths must have a pocket card that allows them to provide services to the public. To obtain a pocket card, you must work in an accredited locksmith associated with a business association and complete the courses. Most locksmith courses last two years.
In addition, you must spend a year working in an authorized locksmith shop. While you can find an apprentice position at any locksmith company, it's recommended to find one of the best locksmiths that allows you to have a mentor with a licensed and certified professional. Many states require locksmiths to obtain a license to practice their trade, and voluntary certification can demonstrate to customers that a locksmith has met high standards of training and experience. In some states, locksmiths must only pass a criminal background check, but in others, locksmiths must complete an approved training course and pass a licensing exam.
Many locksmith programs also provide you with a certification that will help you become a locksmith. For more practical experience, many locksmiths complete an internship or work as apprentices with an experienced locksmith.
